Unlocking South Africa’s hidden talent:
Ashburton Investments and the AEC Foundation partner on strategic investment to bridge the opportunity gap for high-potential learners

Recognising that South Africa does not lack talent, but equal access to opportunity, Ashburton Investments has partnered with the Alexandra Education Committee (AEC) Foundation to help talented young people from under-resourced backgrounds access better education and clearer pathways into professional careers.
“While many high-performing learners from under-resourced communities achieve exceptional results despite significant barriers, too many lack access to the educational environments, networks and support systems needed to realise their potential,” says Vanessa Pillay, Head of Corporate and Commercial Distribution at Ashburton Investments.
Fully invested in education
Building on previous initiatives, including its 2025 work with the Impilo Foundation to support Early Childhood Development centres, Ashburton is again using its position in asset management to drive systemic change. This year’s campaign identifies high-potential learners and places them in environments where they can thrive.
“We believe investment capital has a role to play beyond financial returns. It can create opportunity, unlock potential and shape a more inclusive future. That is why we will donate all fees and profits generated from participating client investments that remain invested until financial year-end to this initiative, at no additional cost to our clients,” says Pillay.
Through these contributions, Ashburton is sponsoring three exceptional high school learners from Alexandra to attend a private school during their critical schooling years.
The AEC Foundation selected the learners through a screening process based on academic performance, problem-solving and creative thinking abilities, and a strong sense of purpose.
For Pillay, who is driving the initiative, the mission is personal. Raised on her father’s belief that education is the foundation for self-sufficiency and advancement, and with more than 25 years’ experience in corporate investment, she understands the resilience needed to navigate paths not yet paved.
“I know first-hand that a change in perspective can turn challenges into opportunities,” Pillay says. “To the learners supported through this initiative: we believe in your potential, and we are honoured to be part of your journey.”
Stepping in to address a systemic challenge
The initiative comes as South Africa continues to grapple with youth unemployment and a skills deficit in high-growth sectors such as financial services. For the AEC Foundation, whose mission is to arrange bursaries for more than 230 students from Alexandra each year, partnerships like this help close the opportunity gap.
South Africa’s youth unemployment and inequality remain severe. According to StatisticsSA, youth aged 15 to 24 face an unemployment rate of 60.9%, while those aged 25 to 34 face 40.6%. The Development Bank of South Africa notes that unequal access to education and technology leaves many young people without skills needed for the labour market and fourth industrial revolution.
Pillay concludes: “We have to make a collective effort as good corporate citizens to ensure that talent, ambition and untapped potential can thrive in the evolving economy. Education remains the most powerful long-term investment we can make in this country and in communities like Alexandra.”
