• A new study from Sharps has surveyed over 3,000 global participants to reveal the world’s biggest homebodies
  • South Africa lands in first place, with a ‘homebody’ score of 95/100, followed by the United States and Canada
  • The ranking combines an Emotional Attachment (to the home) Score with behavioural data, including time spent at home, hosting habits, preference for staying in and attitudes towards social plans

A new global study by fitted furniture specialists Sharps reveals which countries around the world love their homes the most.

The survey measured emotional attachment to the home using statements adapted from the Home Attachment Scale. This measures how individuals relate to their home across areas such as personalisation and self-expression, comfort and aesthetics, feelings of stability and control, desire to return home, and connections to personal and family history.

The Emotional Attachment score was then combined with the following metrics, to create an overall ‘homebody’ score:

  • Time Spent at Home (weekdays and weekends): hours spent at home, outside of sleeping and working
  • Hosting: The average number of times per month participants host friends and family at home
  • Staying In: The percentage of respondents whose ideal Friday or Saturday night involves staying at home
  • Declining Invites: The percentage of respondents who say they frequently decline social invites in favour of staying home
  • Relieved When Plans Cancelled: The percentage of respondents who say they are frequently relieved when plans to go out are cancelled
