Ria du Toit, affectionately known as Gran, spends her days knitting, making small gifts, preparing chocolates and putting together thoughtful hampers. At an age when many people would be expected to slow down, she is still creating with purpose, patience and remarkable heart. Her work is not only about selling handmade items. It is about helping people feel remembered.
From her home in Krugersdorp, Gran makes baby booties and beanies, lap blankets, bed socks, handmade chocolates, party packs and gift hampers. Many of these items are bought by families looking for something personal and meaningful. A large part of her work also supports hospices, care homes, children’s shelters and homeless organisations across the West Rand.
What makes Gran’s story special is the simplicity of it. There is no big operation behind her. There are no machines, no factory lines and no shortcuts. Every item is made by hand, with the kind of care that comes from decades of experience and a genuine love for people. To Gran, a blanket is not only a blanket. It is warmth for an elderly person in a care home. A beanie is not only a beanie. It is comfort for a baby or child who may need to feel that someone is thinking of them.
Her family recently helped her create a small website, www.gransgifts.org, so that more people can find her work and support what she does. Customers can order gifts for themselves, or they can donate on Gran’s behalf: they pay for an item, Gran makes it, and it is delivered to a chosen shelter, hospice or care home.
Gran’s Gifts has grown from a quiet act of family love into a small community project with a very human heart. It shows that generosity does not need to be loud to make a difference. Sometimes it looks like an 89-year-old woman sitting with wool, needles and a cup of tea, making sure that someone else will be a little warmer, a little happier and a little less forgotten.
