Team South Africa has returned home from an unforgettable experience at the Street Child World Cup in Mexico, where the young squad proudly represented the country across football, arts and congress activities over 10 inspiring days of what is a very important international competition.

Selected by the Sporting Chance Development Foundation from its football and life skills programmes, the team of girls aged between 14 and 17 delivered an outstanding performance both on and off the field, finishing as semi-finalists in the football tournament while embracing every aspect of the wider Street Child World Cup programme.

One of the standout moments of the tournament came in South Africa’s opening match, where the girls defeated Brazil with an impressive passing display and three top-class goals. Team South Africa also produced strong performances against the USA, Bolivia, England, Mexico and Kenya before their impressive run came to an end in the semi-finals. Hosts Mexico were ultimately crowned champions of the tournament.

Beyond the football, the team immersed themselves fully in the arts and congress programmes, which form a central part of the Street Child World Cup experience. The girls participated enthusiastically in creative workshops, designing posters and reimagining elements of the South African flag, while also sharing music and dance traditions during one of the tournament’s late-night cultural showcases.

The congress sessions provided an important platform for the players to speak openly about the realities facing street-connected children in South Africa and the changes they hope to see in their communities. Facilitators consistently praised the growth in confidence, leadership and participation shown by the team throughout the event.

The congress programme concluded with a General Assembly in Mexico City attended by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, alongside Bono and The Edge from U2. In a proud moment for Team South Africa, Zethu Ngcobo from Khayelitsha was selected as one of only three young people globally to speak at the Assembly.

Speaking following the team’s return, Sporting Chance Development Foundation Director Natalie Pollock said: “What these girls achieved in Mexico goes far beyond football results. They embraced every challenge, every opportunity and every moment of growth with courage, humility and pride. Watching them build friendships with young people from around the world, find their voices in the congress sessions and compete with such passion on the field was incredibly special. They represented South Africa beautifully.”

The organisers of the Street Child World Cup hosted more than 20 countries and close to 500 participants. Despite demanding conditions, including extreme heat and long days of activity, Team South Africa adapted admirably to a completely new environment while embracing Mexican culture, music, food and traditions throughout their stay.

For many of the girls, the tournament marked their first experience travelling internationally and boarding an aeroplane, making the journey a truly life-changing opportunity. The next phase of the programme will now see the players return to their communities to host specialised football coaching clinics and continue using sport as a platform for leadership and social change.
